Man Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Child Captured After 16 Years
Jorge Cerezo was convicted in 2001, and has been on the run since 2002, according to the Burlington County Sheriff.

A man convicted of the sexual assault of a minor in Burlington County who escaped police custody 16 years ago has been captured in Georgia, officials announced on Friday.
Jorge Cerezo, age 44, was captured by the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department’s Fugitive Unit, in cooperation with the United States Marshal Service and the New Jersey State Police in Suwanee, Georgia, Sheriff Jean E. Stanfield announced on Friday. He was transported to the Burlington County Detention Center in Mt. Holly on Thursday, April 12.
“This was great work and wonderful interagency cooperation,” Stanfield said. “When law enforcement officials are able to work together, we can make our communities safer for everyone.”

Cerezo was accused of sexually assaulting his step-daughter in a hotel room while two other children were present on July 24, 2001. One of the minors was able to escape, and alerted New Jersey State Police.
Cerezo was subsequently arrested by New Jersey State Police. He was later convicted of aggravated sexual assault in the Burlington County Superior Court. Before he could be sentenced, he fled. A warrant was issued for his arrest on July 2, 2002.

At first, authorities thought Cerezo had fled to Mexico, Stanfield said. The investigation continued, though, and Sheriff’s Det. Stephen Felder was able to determine that Cerezo was still in the United States. Felder also identified several persons of interest that could assist with the investigation.
He then confirmed Cerezo’s address, and the United States Marshal Service and the New Jersey State Police traveled to Suwanee, Georgia to apprehend the fugitive. Cerezo will now additionally be charged with bail jumping.
“I am proud that our department continues to demonstrate its effectiveness and ability to apprehend individuals who pose a threat to our communities,” Stanfield said. “I extend my thanks to all parties involved in what was another successful fugitive apprehension.”
