Man Imprisoned For Setting Fatal Fire In Burlington County

PEMBERTON, NJ — A man who started a fatal apartment fire in Burlington County was sentenced Monday to 22 years in prison. Newlin Evans IV must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence before parole eligibility for the blaze that killed Camryn Powell last year.

The fire took place on April 20, 2022, at the Tara Hall Apartment Complex in Pemberton Borough. The investigation revealed that Evans cut the screen of the ground-floor apartment, broke the window and threw gasoline-soaked material that he lit on fire into the unit.

Powell, 22, lived inthe apartment complex.

Evans, who suffered burns, fled the scene. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia for treatment and got arrested the following May, when he was discharged.

The 23-year-old Burlington Township resident pleaded guilty in January to first-degree aggravated manslaughter.
