Man Indicted In Fatal Overdose Of Delran Man: Police

A Camden man has been indicted in connection with the fatal overdose of a man he sold heroin to, Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina announced. Jose LaPorte, 24, was indicted by a Burlington County Grand Jury on Strict Liability for first-degree drug-induced death, third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, two counts of third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, and third-degree distribution of a controlled dangerous substance.

LaPorte is charged in connection with the death of 35-year-old Sung Han, of Delran, who died in his home during the early morning hours of April 12. An investigation determined that he died of an overdose, and that LaPorte had sold him the heroin, police said. Burlington Township police arrested LaPorte on April 14 when they say the found him in possession of heroin. LaPorte has been detained in the Burlington County Jail since his arrest.

“Our county, like so many others throughout the country, is plagued by a drug epidemic that in order to effectively combat requires all of us to join together and use every tool at our disposal,” Coffina said. “The strict liability drug-induced death statute is an important tool to punish and deter purveyors of this poison that is killing far too many of our fellow residents. The public, and people involved in dealing these lethal drugs, can expect more of these cases to be prosecuted by our Office, in conjunction with our law enforcement partners throughout the county.”

The case was presented to the Grand Jury by Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor Danny Ljungberg.

The case was investigated by the Burlington Township Police Department and the Burlington
County Prosecutor’s Office, with assistance from the Willingboro Township Police Department.
The lead investigator was Burlington Township Police Detective Anthony Fontana.
