Concerns Over Loud Noise Grow In Moorestown, Cinnaminson

One municipality said it is doing something about the so-called 'boom-car parties.'

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ – The sounds of spring have returned to Cinnaminson and Moorestown, like birds chirping, children playing and baseballs connecting with bats and gloves.

Not-so-pleasant noises are also being heard, frustrating some residents.

“Saturday about 1:30 I heard thump, thump, thump and the last I heard it was a little after 8 a.m,” Moorestown Township Council Member David Zipin said at Monday’s Moorestown Council Meeting.

There is very little Moorestown can do to address the unpleasant noises, according to Moorestown Township Manager Kevin Aberant.

“It is originating from outside the township, therefore our ability to address it is limited,” he added.

Down the road in Cinnaminson and other riverfront communities, residents are hearing the unpleasant noises too, said Eric Schubiger, Cinnaminson Township Administrator.

“It is a very loud booming sound like someone is having a party off in the distance,” Roger Hale told Patch. “The closer to the river you get the more obnoxious it gets. In terms of who hears it, it all depends on the direction these boom cars are facing and how clear the night is.”

The not-so-pleasant noises mean “boom-car parties”— people on undeveloped land in the Philadelphia area who use large speakers for their parties — have resumed in Camden and Philadelphia, Cinnaminson Police Chief Richard Calabrese told Patch.

“I have a meeting later this week to discuss the matter with other representatives from both Philadelphia and New Jersey,” Calabrese added.

Others are working to curtail the noises as well.

“Cinnaminson Township will continue to advocate for our residents by working with other agencies in an effort to address this matter,” Schubiger said in an interview.
