Riverton Police Hosting Special Olympics Fundraiser May 16
The "BBQ Fund Raiser" takes place at the Orange Blossom Bakery and Café located at Broad and Main Streets in Riverton.

The Riverton Police Department is sponsoring a community fund raising and awareness event in which all proceeds benefit the Special Olympics New Jersey on Saturday, May 16, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The “BBQ Fund Raiser” takes place at the Orange Blossom Bakery and Café located at Broad and Main Streets in Riverton.
It will include a choice of gourmet burgers, kebabs, ribs and all the fixins’, police said on Wednesday.

This is the second year that the members of the Riverton Police Department, in concert with numerous community volunteers, have supported this cause.
Last year’s event raised more than $5,000.

Grace and Glenn Scheffler, owners of the Orange Blossom Bakery and Café and participating organizers of the event are once again working with Chief John Shaw and the Riverton Police Department for the event.
The Schefflers are known for their outstanding support to the residents of Riverton and the surrounding communities, police said.
“Not only does the Police Department in Riverton protect and serve our residents and those who pass through our town, but my officers and I believe it is also important to support our community by participating in and supporting the fine work that the Special Olympians in our State undertake,” Shaw told volunteers at a recent planning meeting.
The mission of the Special Olympics New Jersey is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community
Special Olympics New Jersey is a not-for-profit organization that provides sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with special intellectual and physical limitations. More than 24,000 athletes from NJ participate in this worthwhile organization.
The cost is $12 per adult and $5 per child. Reservations for either a 4:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. seating should be made by calling 856-303-8700 or stopping by the Orange Blossom Café and Bakery. Walk-ins will be accommodated as seating allows.
