Rowan College at Burlington County Earns Top Spot in Mathematics Competition

A trio from Rowan College at Burlington County was the top team from a two-year college at the 13th annual New Jersey Undergraduate Mathematics Competition (NJUMC) held last month at William Paterson University.

The team of Ryan Bernstein, Scott Harman and David Lundquist earned distinction as the Best Team from a Two-Year School and placed 11th overall ahead of several four-year institutions from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the college said on Tuesday.

Individually, Harman placed 13thoverall out of 95 students and was tied for the top ranked individual from a two-year college.

Participants register as teams of up to three students, and compete in both team and individual competitions.

This year, there were 23 registered teams from four-year institutions and nine registered teams from two-year institutions, according to the college.

Rowan College at Burlington County students Bryan Bugyi, Israel Jackson, Kardigue Konte, Edward Minnix III and Kediel Morales also participated in the competition.

“I am very proud of the accomplishments of the students who competed in this competition,” Rowan College at Burlington County President Paul Drayton said. “Our faculty and students can perform high-level mathematics just as well, if not better, than their peers from four-year institutions. This is another example of high-achieving students excelling at RCBC.”

"This was a win for our entire college. The students worked hard to prepare and compete and it took a total team effort combining students and faculty members including Crystal Bourne, Jianene Meola, Priti Mihalik, Robert Roach and myself,” Rowan College at Burlington County Mathematics Lecturer Jonathan Weisbrod, who has been involved with the NJUMC since 2009, said. “Hearing the names of our students during the awards ceremony was an exciting experience for all of us and we are very proud to share a role in our students’ success.”
