Cappello reiterated the school district’s commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for students the day after 17 people were killed in a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
After the shootings, the district met with the police department to evaluate their procedures in the event of a similar situation. The procedures are frequently under review, and there is a School Resource Officer (SRO) from the police department assigned to protect the schools Cappello said.

Additionally, the district provided an information guide “Talking to Children About the Shooting,” as part of an online message from Cappello on the district’s website.
“Please do not hesitate to call my office or your child’s building principal if you have any questions related to our school safety plans and emergency preparedness,” Cappello said in his letter.
