South Jersey Man Made, Shared Child Porn: Authorities

He has been accused of having over 1,000 items of child porn on his computer, including some he made and shared.

A South Jersey man has been indicted on charges of having more than 1,000 files of child pornography - including some that he made - on his computer, authorities announced. Gregory Van Sciver, 62, of Lumberton, is also accused of using file-sharing software to distribute child pornography on the internet, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced.

A special agent with U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Newark was investigating the distribution of child pornography on a file-sharing network popular with sex offenders when he came across Van Sciver, authorities said.

The agent downloaded 300 files of child pornography from a shared folder at an IP address that was traced to Van Sciver, authorities said.

HSI and the Division of Criminal Justice Financial & Computer Crimes Bureau, with assistance from the Lumberton Police Department, executed a search warrant at Van Sciver’s home on Jan. 3.
Detectives said that a full forensic examination of Van Sciver’s computer revealed over 1,000 files of child pornography, including child pornography Van Sciver manufactured.

On Thursday, Van Sciver was indicted by a grand jury on the following charges:
  • Second-degree distribution of 25 or more items of child pornography;
  • Second-degree storing or maintaining 25 or more items of child pornography using a file-sharing program;
  • Second-degree possession of 1,000 or more items of child pornography; and
  • Second-degree manufacturing child pornography.

Second-degree charges carry a sentence of five to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $150,000. The charges of distributing – or storing or maintaining using a file-sharing program – more than 25 items of child pornography carry a mandatory minimum term of five years of parole ineligibility.
