Township Committee to Suggest School Budget Cuts Monday

The school board approved position cuts at Tuesday's meeting.

For the past two weeks, members of township committee and the school board have met to discuss possible further cuts in the district’s school budget, which was in April by 22 votes.

Mayor said last week cuts would be discussed and voted on at the township committee’s Monday meeting.

The board already saved about $165,000 as a result of eliminating certain positions within the district. No staff or teachers lost their jobs.

The following positions have already been cut out of the budget: Supervisor K-8 Language Arts/K-12 Reading, Supervisor of Mathematics K-12, In-class Suspension Room, Middle School Cafeteria/Playground Aides (2), / BSIP teaching position, and Supervisor of Health/PE/Related Arts/Art/Music K-12.

Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi said the positions themselves, not the people, have been eliminated.

“The main thing is the money we’ve saved as a result of this,” Illuzzi said.

The board had previously agreed to these cuts, but voted to approve at their meeting Tuesday.

Township committee meets 7:30 p.m., Monday at the . The next board of education meeting is at 7:30, Tuesday, June 7, in the cafeteria at the middle school. There, students will receive academic awards.
