Township Recommends $230,000 In Cuts to School Budget

Township committee members voted to suggest $230,000 in cuts to the school budget, saving the average homeowner about $37 from the budget the school board .
Mayor said, typically, cuts to administration are discussed first, but in this case, that was "largely overlooked."
"I believe we did exactly what the voters have asked us to do," Fitzpatrick said.

However, before the vote, Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi asked for an extra $33,000 back in to support a part-time basic skills teacher at the middle school. He said because of budget cuts last year the school board had to cut several positions in the district.
Township committee voted 4-0 with one abstention to retain the amount of cuts suggested. Committeeman John Rooney abstained.

Township Administrator Gerry Seneski said committee suggested $70,000 from three administrative support positions going from full-time to part-time; $90,000 from not appointing an in-school suspension teacher at the middle school; and nearly $19,000 in cafeteria aides; among other suggestions.
It is the final decision of the school board as to where cuts where be made to fulfill the $230,000 obligation from the township committee.
