2 Men Charged In Armed Robbery Spree At Union County Stores

Two Newark men were charged with robbing stores at gunpoint in Springfield, Clark, Roselle Park and Rahway: Prosecutor.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Two Essex County men were arrested and charged with robbing multiple Union County convenience stores at gun point late last year, acting Union County Prosecutor Michael A. Monahan announced Thursday.

Meshach Whagar, 29, and Tione Davis, 35, both of Newark are both charged with multiple counts of first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery, and two related second-degree weapons offenses.

Whagar and Davis are charged with committing the following armed robberies:

  • Nov. 25, 2017 at around 3:50 a.m. at the BP gas station on Meisel Avenue in Springfield;
  • Dec. 1, 2017 at 3:45 a.m. at the 7-Eleven on Westfield Avenue West in Roselle Park;
  • Dec. 10, 2017 shortly after 3 a.m. at the QuickChek on Westfield Avenue in Clark;
  • Dec. 11, 2017 at 2:20 a.m. at the QuickChek on Woodbridge Road in Rahway.

During each robbery, an armed gunman later identified as Davis, would point a handgun at the store clerk, demanded money, and forcibly removed cash from the register till, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Shawn Barnes, who is prosecuting the case.

In all of the incidents — except the Rahway QuickChek robbery — Davis then allegedly fled the scene in a white two-door Honda Accord being driven by Whagar.
