Abandoned Warehouse Fire Sends Clark Firefighter To Hopsital

NJ Transit suspended train service Wednesday night due to the fire in an abandoned warehouse next to the tracks.

LINDEN, NJ — A three-alarm blaze broke out at an abandoned warehouse in Linden sending one firefighter to the hospital on Wednesday night.

Smoke was reported at the building in the 1000 block of West Elizabeth Avenue next to the NJ Transit train tracks on Feb. 15 at around 10 p.m.

NJ Transit suspended service because of how close the fire was to the tracks. As a precaution, Union County Hazmat crews were on scene monitoring air quality due to the potential contaminants on the property, Linden Police reported.

The fire was completely contained shortly after 4 a.m. on Thursday by firefighters from Linden and surrounding towns, who responded as part of the Union County Mutual Aid System. NJ Transit resumed full service afterwards as well.

One Clark Firefighter was injured during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and later released.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Fire Investigators from Linden and Union County. The dangerous conditions at the property, which has been targeted for redevelopment by City Officials after years of neglect, has slowed Investigator’s access to the building, police reported.

“A number of Fire, Police, and EMS agencies were responded to this fire, and we are very pleased with the coordination involved,” said Linden Fire Chief Joseph Dooley. “Conditions on the property were very dangerous, so to get this fire under control quickly and without anyone being seriously hurt is a great job.”
