370-Unit Mixed Use Project Underway In Garwood

The project will have about 370 apartments and 19,000 square feet of retail space at the intersection of South Avenue and Center Street.

GARWOOD, NJ — Construction is beginning on the new Vermella at Garwood Station, a mixed-use project with about 370 apartments and 19,000 square feet of retail space at the intersection of South Avenue and Center Street in downtown Garwood.

Demolition was pretty much completed of a large industrial complex as of Dec. 11, according to Russo Development.

The site is adjacent to New Jersey Transit’s Raritan Valley Line and a short walk to a New Jersey Transit Station.

"We are always attracted to redevelopment opportunities in strong communities like Garwood that represent a value to newcomers and whose legacy residents – whether young households just starting out or empty-nesters down-sizing – love their town and are looking for modern, upscale housing at a reasonable price," says Edward Russo, CEO of Russo Development.

"These industrial uses were vacant eyesores in our community for many years and we knew redevelopment was sorely needed, however we took our time and made sure we got the right project for our town working with Russo Development during the five years of planning and design for this site," says Mayor Charles Lombardo, who is retiring after serving more than 25 years as Garwood’s Mayor and Councilman.
