CLARK, NJ — A Clark nurse who spent decades caring for others found herself on the receiving end of the most profound care imaginable this Mother's Day — a kidney donated by her own daughter.

Kathleen "Kathy" Prestinari underwent a successful kidney transplant on Nov. 5, with her daughter Kaitlyn Prestinari serving as the living donor. This month marked six months since the surgery.

Kathy's kidney disease progressed through 2024, bringing physical and emotional challenges for the family. Despite exploring multiple donor options, none proved viable — a reality familiar to the more than 100,000 Americans, including nearly 4,000 New Jerseyans, currently awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing and NJ Sharing Network.

Kaitlyn, who has three siblings, said watching her mother's health decline made her decision clear.

"My mom is the backbone of my family," Kaitlyn said. "Seeing her like that, I knew I needed to step up — for her, for my dad, and for my three siblings. We need her with us for as long as possible."

The transplant has given the family a renewed sense of closeness. They now savor simple things — shared meals, ordinary moments that once felt uncertain.

"This Mother's Day definitely felt a lot different," Kathy said. "It's about life, family, and second chances. I get to celebrate because of my daughter."

Kathy, a nurse by profession, said no words fully capture what the gift means.

"As a mother, you spend your life protecting them," she said. "To see Kaitlyn step forward with such strength and love — it's overwhelming in the most beautiful way. She gave me more time, more memories, and more moments with my family."

The family is sharing their story to raise awareness for NJ Sharing Network. In November, Kaitlyn's employer, Robert Half, hosted a fundraiser that raised more than $4,000 for the Sharing Network Foundation.
