Carjacker Leads Clark, Cranford Police On Wild Chase

Breaking: The van driven by an Irvington man struck several Cranford patrol cars and attempted to run down a police officer, police say.

CLARK, NJ — An alleged carjacker from Irvington was arrested after taking police on a chase through multiple Union County towns and attempting to run over an officer, Clark Police report.

The chase began on Sunday when Irvington police were pursuing Alsemaj Covington, 23, of Irvington on the Garden State Parkway in a white work van that had been reportedly carjacked at gun point in Irvington, Clark Police press officer Susan Perez reported.

During the chase, Covington crashed through the fence of the Garden State Parkway maintenance yard and made his way into the Florence Drive neighborhood of Clark. The van then traveled into Cranford where it was confronted by Cranford Police, according to Perez.

Covington then struck several Cranford patrol cars and attempted to run down Cranford Police Officer Nelson Hearns, Perez said.

Cranford Police Officer Christopher DiFabio chased the van back into Clark where both Cranford and Clark officers chased the vehicle into the Tremley Point area of Linden before it hit a guardrail bringing the vehicle to a stop, Perez said.

Covington was taken into custody without incident by Clark Police Officer Pedro Oliveira and Sergeant Kevin Shackleton along with police officers from the Township of Cranford.

Covington was charged with second degree eluding and aggravated assault on police and remanded to the Union County Jail.
