Silence not golden in Clark situation

I am unimpressed by the statement of Mark Dugan, the Clark Township attorney, at an April 18 township council meeting. He told about 60 residents in attendance that since he “instructed” council members not to comment while an investigation is pending, if they “want to be angry at someone, be angry with me” and not the council members.
The residents did not “want” to be angry at someone, but rather, as decent people outraged by the racist remarks of their mayor and an apparent cover-up by the council, they had no choice but to be angry. Cruel bigotry and the concealment of it by elected officials will surely create anger in moral, principled people.
Moreover, lawyers do not “instruct,” we “advise.”
One senses that the well-justified anger of the Clark residents was primarily engendered by the disgusting remarks Mayor Sal Bonaccorso previously made about African Americans, and what the council allegedly did to cover up this horrible saga. Of course, the ongoing silence of these elected officials in the face of such deeply troubling evidence could not have pleased anyone in attendance.
It made a terrible situation worse.
