Dr. Hazelton Is New Superintendent For Linden Public Schools

The Linden Board of Education voted Monday, June 15, to appoint Dr. Marnie Hazelton to be the new superintendent of schools – making her the district’s second woman of color to hold the position.

The board voted at a special meeting to hire Hazelton after a search that lasted several months. She will take over the position on July 1 at a salary of $215,000 per year under a five-year contract.

“It is a great honor to be selected to serve as the next superintendent for Linden Public Schools,” Hazelton said. “I am both humbled and eager to work with the Board of Education, students, teachers, and parents to ensure the continued academic success for ALL students in Linden. I have started following students and teachers on various social media platforms; the love and commitment to educating the whole child are very evident in Linden.”

Denise Cleary, who has served as interim superintendent for the past year, guiding the district through the difficulties associated with COVID-19 and remote learning, has returned to her former position of assistant superintendent. The board voted to reappoint her Monday night.

Hazelton previously served as superintendent of schools for the Roosevelt Union Free School District in Roosevelt, NY, for nearly five years. She previously served as coordinator for elementary education, and director of state and federal funded programs and grants for Roosevelt.

Hazelton will be the Linden Public Schools’ first African-American superintendent, and the first woman to hold the position as a permanent role.
She holds a doctoral degree in educational policy and leadership from Hofstra University as well as a master’s degree in elementary education and teaching from Brooklyn College.
