Driver Crashes Into Garwood Cop Car, Charged With DWI: Police

The marked Garwood patrol car was hit by a blue Jeep Patriot while on Walnut Street.

GARWOOD, NJ — A driver crashed into a Garwood police car and was charged with driving while intoxicated recently.

At around 1:15 a.m. on Feb. 22, Garwood Police Officer Roberto Camporeale was outside of his marked vehicle on Walnut Street just past North Avenue trying to resolve a dispute with a cab driver and his passenger over a fare when his car was hit from behind, police report.

The patrol car was hit by a blue Jeep Patriot which was driven by Johnathan E. Williams, 27, of Newark.

Williams submitted samples of his breath for testing with a resulting blood alcohol level of 0.16 percent, police said. The legal blood alcohol content limit is 0.08 percent.

Williams was issued several summons including DWI, careless driving, improper passing, and disregard of a traffic signal. He was released pending his appearance in court.

There were no injuries reported as a result of this crash.
