Driver Escapes Icy Waters After Car Plunges Off Parkway In Clark

CLARK, NJ — A driver escaped the icy waters after their car drove off the Garden State Parkway in the Clark area and plunged into the Rahway River Wednesday night.

The accident was reported at 6:54 p.m. and when emergency responders arrived the driver had already escaped the car.

"The vehicle was almost submerged right side up," said Clark Fire Chief Frank Cerasa.

No other occupants were inside the car. Clark First Aid squad attended to the driver of the vehicle, who was then transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Union County Hazmat checked to make sure there were no vehicle fluids leaking into the water.

The Cranford Fire Department water rescue members went back in the water to help with securing and removing the vehicle from the water.

All Clark companies cleared the scene at 8:55 p.m. Linden and Rahway Fire Departments also assisted.

"The members at the scene did an excellent job in very cold and dangerous conditions," said Cerasa.
