​Garwood Police Chief Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Garwood Police Chief James Wright was given a test for COVID-19 at Kean University on March 25, officials said.

GARWOOD, NJ — Garwood Police Chief James H. Wright has tested positive for the new coronavirus, officials announced Thursday.

Wright began experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19 on March 24 and immediately began to self-quarantine. After talking with his doctor he was given a test for COVID-19 at Kean University on March 25, Garwood Police said.

After being tested Wright has been working with board of health representatives to see if anyone else was in contact with him.

At this time no other members of the Garwood Police Department or staff have shown symptoms associated with the new coronavirus, police said.

Captain Douglas Stoffer is in command of daily operations as officer in charge while Wright is recovering.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Union County has 1,661 positive COVID-19 cases and 29 deaths.
