Rabid Raccoon Killed By Dog In Linden, Health Officials Warn

LINDEN, NJ — A raccoon killed by a dog in Linden was later found to have tested positive for rabies, said Linden Police.

On March 3, a raccoon was killed by a dog in the area of Fay Avenue and E. Elizabeth Avenue.

"This is the second raccoon to test positive this year; another case was reported in January in the area of E. Linden Aveue between S. Park Avenue and Ashton Avenue," said Linden Police.

Police shared the information with the public out of an abundance of caution. There have been no confirmed cases of transmission to humans or pets.

Proper precautions can effectively minimize the dangers associated with rabies, including:

• Vaccinate Pets: Keep pet rabies vaccines up to date
• Avoid Wildlife: Do not approach, feed, or touch wildlife, especially those acting strangely (lethargic, aggressive, or unusually friendly)
• Secure Trash: Wildlife, especially raccoons, are attracted to unsecured garbage cans, pet food, and fallen fruit
• If Bitten/Scratched: Wash wounds immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention right away.
• Report Sick Animals: Report any sightings of sick, acting strange, or aggressive animals to the Linden Board of Health at 908-474-8409. During an emergency or during non-business hours, contact the Linden Police Department by calling 908-474-8500 or by dialing 911.
