Rahway Innovates Reopening Process With Shared Public Spaces
An official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the Train Station Plaza on Friday, June 19 to mark the new style of downtown dining.

As of June 15, the City of Rahway has opened seven outdoor shared public spaces throughout the downtown, as part of their Small Business Recovery Strategy, to proactively maximize outdoor space for businesses and provide safe areas for customers to dine and socialize. An official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the Train Station Plaza on Friday, June 19 at 3pm to mark the new style of downtown dining in Rahway.

The public spaces for outdoor dining and socializing include:
- Train Station Plaza
- East Cherry St Lot (between 59 and 69 East Cherry St.)
- East Cherry St. (Street closure between Monroe St. and Irving St.)
- Lewis St. (Street closure between Main St. and the River Place Lot driveway)
- Paseo (between 1495 and 1501 East Main St.)
- Arts District Park (located directly across from the Union County Performing Arts Center at Irving St. and Central Ave.)
- Bridge Street Pedestrian Bridge (between Main St. and Clarkson Place, adjacent to the rail crossing)
Mayor Giacobbe stated, “Our city has suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and while we are not completely out of the woods with the virus, I’m excited for our city to reopen, safely and responsibly. I will do everything in my power as Mayor to ensure that the local businesses have the support they need to bounce back.” Giacobbe continued, “As part of a larger “Rahway Stronger” reopening campaign, the City of Rahway is encouraging support for our local businesses via digital marketing, signage placement and commercial spots to attract patrons within and beyond Rahway.”

All public spaces will adhere to the current State of New Jersey guidelines and hand sanitizing stations as well as access to free public Wi-Fi. In order to support patronage of the local businesses, the City of Rahway is also implementing free parking downtown, for a maximum of four hours, until June 30. Summonses will not be issued during this period.
