This release was submitted by the Garwood Library.
The Garwood Public Library presents folk singer/song writer Spook Handy on Wednesday, April 17th at 7:00 PM. His style of acoustic guitar, harmonica, and singing fits right in with the likes of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, and Peter, Paul and Mary. Many of the songs in this program and the stories behind them were taught to Mr. Handy by his mentor Pete Seeger.
Mr. Handy has four full length CDs to his credit, with a fifth on its way. He has written for film and theater, and his songs have charted as high as #10 on the folk radio charts. He has toured throughout the country, playing more than 3,000 concerts, and has performed dozens of times with Pete Seeger and shared the stage with Donovan and Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. Ten years ago, Pete Seeger heard Spook’s song “Vote” and added it to his playlist. According to Mr. Seeger, “Spook Handy really understands how to write a good song that says something important”.

Mr. Handy has also MCed over 1,300 events including open mics and festivals, and facilitated scores of workshops and presented lecture/concerts on the Power of Song at colleges and universities. His songs tell the story of contemporary America through people he’s met, places he’s been, and predicaments he’s found himself in. His easy going manner invites his audiences to step out of their box, open their hearts, and get involved in his music.
