Teens Driving Stolen Truck Lead Roselle Park Police On Chase: PD

2 teens were arrested after Roselle Park Police were investigating car burglaries in the area.

ROSELLE PARK, NJ — Teenagers driving a stolen truck lead police on a chase through Roselle Park before being arrested, police said.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 2:25 a.m. Cpl. Rick Gaylord and Officer Vincent Picarelli were checking out the Henry Street area on a report of suspicious people looking into parked cars.

A resident said they saw three people opening a car door and yelled at them when they jumped into a dark colored Ford ranger pickup truck and took off, Roselle Park Police Detective Sgt. Richard Cocca said.

Not too long afterwards, Officer Ted Kot saw the Ford pickup truck coming over the Gordon Street Bridge and commit a motor vehicle violation. When Kot tried to pull over the truck, the driver did not stop causing a chase before the car was stopped, Cocca said.

Nelson Pereyra, 19, of Elizabeth, and a 17-year-old juvenile from Elizabeth were both arrested. A third person is still at large. The Ford truck they were driving was later found to be stolen out of
Elizabeth, Cocca said.

Pereyra was processed and released on the following charges: eluding an officer, possession of a
weapon, obstruction, and receiving stolen property.

The 17-year-old male was charged with the following criminal charges: eluding an
officer, receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana), and resisting arrest.

He was also charged with the following motor vehicle summonses: driving without a license, careless driving, reckless driving, failure to signal, speeding, driving wrong way on a one-way street, failure to possess insurance card, failure to possess driver’s license, failure to possess registration, unsafe lane change, failure to pull over for emergency vehicle, and improper use of divided highway.

The juvenile was released to parents, pending a future Family Court date. Pereyra was released pending a future Union County Superior Court date.

Police are continuing to investigate the vehicle burglaries reported in the area.
