Trapped Driver Rescued, Airlifted To Hospital After Clark Crash

It took Clark and Cranford firefighters 20 minutes to rescue the Toms River woman trapped inside a car on the Garden State Parkway.

CLARK, NJ — It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to rescue a Toms River woman, who was trapped inside her car, following a crash on the Garden State Parkway in Clark on Monday night.

At around 8:15 p.m. Nicholle May, 34, of Toms River was driving her Mercedes Benz 320 south on the Garden State Parkway when she went off the right side of the road, struck multiple sign posts and slammed into a concrete overpass for the Westfied Avenue Bridge, said New Jersey State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez.

Clark and Cranford Fire Departments arrived and worked for about 20 minutes to try and free May from the crushed car, Clark Fire Captain Ryan Might said.

May, who was the only person in the car, was then airlifted by Medivac Atlantic Air 1 to University Hospital with serious injuries.

As a result of the crash all lanes on the Garden State Parkway south were closed for 40 minutes, while the right lanes remained closed for three hours.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
