Why:
When Democrats in other states have taken bold stands in fighting to save the rights of the working class, here in New Jersey some of the members of the Democratic Party joined hands with union busting Gov. Chris Christie to cut worker benefits.
Since members of State and Public worker unions are not able to strike, collective bargaining rights was the only recourse to negotiate for their benefits, better working conditions, and wages.
Going against long held Democratic values of protecting working families, Senate President Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver led the way to ending collective bargaining on health care for state employees and reducing their benefits.
This bill also froze retirees cost of living adjustments (COLA) for the next 30 years. These raises have fluctuated and for the last two years have been 0%. Without raises the elderly in New Jersey may in time find themselves impoverished.
More disturbing, unlike Wisconsin, where the private sector unions joined with the public workers in fighting for workers rights, NJ Building and Trade unions [2]wound up endorsing the Christiecrats [3]at the recent AFL-CIO convention. The idea behind unions is to lift thy brother up.....not with this group...shame on them. Let them know their actions aren't acceptable, click here [4]
But the most upsetting is: Being asked at every event in the past couple of years, the same question by those in attendance......Where is everyone? For this I have no answer. I learned a long time ago, the only person I can answer for is myself. My reasons are, I want for my grandchildren to have a chance to achieve their dreams, the way that my parents and grandparents fought for a better future for me....and now to see that all being taken away, leaves me feeling like I have failed at guarding safety nets secured by previous generations, and a lesser vison of hope for the generations to come.
The right, or more appropriate, the corporations have taken over this country and we are in a fight for basic human rights. The right to a decent living, the right to education, the right for a safe environment, the right for the people to be heard.
Remember what unions gave [5] to you and earlier generations for a better way of life, remember labor unions were all that stood in opposition to Hitler’s Fascism. Now everything unions fought for, that benefited everyone, is at stake.Whether you are a union member or not, we all need to be involved.
Join the Fight ! New Jersey needs you….Our Country needs you !
