Lacrosse Season Ends on Sour Note

Collingswood's lacrosse team falls to Seneca in its final game of the season, finishing 12-8 overall.

Panthers lacrosse had one final huddle, and a post-game speech from head coach Stephanie Lamaina, before the cry, "Good job, seniors!” could be heard echoing through Knight Park this past Wednesday.

In that moment, the Panthers' 2010-11 season ended.

If defensive play wins games, the Panthers never stood a chance Wednesday afternoon, allowing 17 total goals against Seneca High School, with 12 in the first half alone.

In spite of their second-half efforts—which had Panthers keeping up with Seneca's Golden Eagles and matching their five goals—Collingswood simply couldn't overcome the early deficit, losing by a final score of 17-10.

Seneca began the game with a 3-0 lead in the contest’s first two minutes, and outscored Panthers 12-5 in the first half.

Defensive inconsistencies proved fatal to Collingswood, with the Golden Eagles never giving away possession of the ball in the game’s opening moments.

In spite of an undesirable outcome, Panthers’ 10-goal performance marks the 12th time in 18 games this season they've scored double digits.

Wednesday's contributions came from senior captains Jordan Calderone and Beth LaBar—each player recording three goals—and senior attack Jenna Morrison and sophomore midfielder Ellie O’Neill, who scored two goals apiece.

With the loss, Panthers concluded their season with a 12-8 record. It's a seven-game improvement from 2010, when Panthers won just five out of 20 games.

With the season behind them, Collingswood's lacrosse team still has good days ahead. Six varsity letter-winners will graduate this year, including Calderone, LaBar and Morrison, along with defenders Katie Smith and Allison Riss.
