Medical Seminar on Identifying Addiction Set for Collingswood

The seminar will be presented by the Camden County Freeholder Board and the Camden County Addiction Awareness Taskforce.

Collingswood, NJ -- The Camden County Freeholder Board and the Camden County Addiction Awareness Taskforce are hosting a continuing education credit dinner for Physicians, Physicians Assistants and Nurse Practitioners titled “Identifying Addiction in Your Practice” at the Collingswood Community Center, 30 West Collings Avenue in Collingswood, on Wednesday, March 2, 6 p.m.

“First and foremost we know that many cases of heroin addiction start with prescription pain pills, so it is critical for us to speak with the medical community and include them in our work with the task force,” Camden County Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Health Department, said. “Not only will this be a great review of how to recognize a patient with a dependency issue, there will be information on preventative prescribing practices as well.”

Seabrook House Medical Director Joseph Ranieri will lead the discussion. Seabrook House, is an internationally recognized drug and alcohol treatment center and detoxification program.

Participants will learn how to identify and screen substance use in the patient population, complete a brief intervention with patients who suffer from addiction and recognize when to refer substance abuse patients for treatment.

“The objective of this task force is to focus on all variables that play into addiction and combat it from all angles,” Rodriguez said. “Having an active dialogue with the medical community is just as important as identifying treatment options, creating new avenues to discard prescription medication and tearing down the stigma surrounding addiction. We need assistance from all corners of community to combat the scourge of heroin and the abuse of prescription pain killers and this is another innovative way to do it.”
