Newton Lake to Get Chemical Treatment as Early as Monday

Newton Lake is scheduled for a round of chemical treatments that could begin as early as Monday and stretch through October 11.

Pubic notice was provided in advance of the first planned round of chemical treatments, which had been slated for June 2013.

That was put on hold in June, however, while the county tried to scoop algae beds from the bottom of the lake.

But that notice was repeated in print media this week, reminding residents of Collingswood, Oaklyn and Haddon Township that "aquatic pesticides...for aquatic weed control" between September 9 and October 11.

Prior to intervention from county government earlier this summer, the lake had been strangled with an overgrowth of algae; its condition seems visibly improved in recent months.

It is not known whether this additional treatment was part of an initial scheduled course of applications or if it was a late addition.

The list of chemicals used could include 

• Reward (diquat dibromide)
• Aquathol K (endothall)
• Clipper (flumioxazin)
• Aquapro (glyphosate)
• algae control with Captain (copper)
• copper sulfate by boat equipment
