Route 42 North Ramp to I-295 North to Close This Week

The Route 42 northbound ramp to I-295 northbound will be closed overnight this week, Sept. 29-Oct. 2, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced on Tuesday. The ramp will be closed from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. each night.

“Residents should be aware that in addition to this week’s closures, this construction will impact their commute and their communities for several years,” Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works, said. “When this project is completed, it will alleviate much of the traffic congestion currently experienced on a daily basis. It will be a monumental change for this highway interchange creating a substantial upgrade to the current configuration.”

The following detour will be in effect for those driving on Route 42 northbound: Take exit 1C, Market Street. Turn left onto Market Street then make a right onto I-76 eastbound. Continue on I-76 eastbound to exit 1C, I-295 northbound.

This work is part of the $900 million Direct Connection project that will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42. NJDOT’s project website provides construction activity schedules and updates.

NJDOT is also in the process of replacing the Blue Anchor Dam and Bridge in Winslow Township. Motorists should be prepared for changes in traffic patterns on the White Horse Pike (Route 30) between Fleming Pike and Wharton Avenue.

The Blue Anchor Dam was constructed in 1926 and sits on the Blue Anchor Brook surrounded by the Route 30 roadway embankment.

The $7 million project will replace the existing timber spillway with a concrete spillway that is capable of handling a 100-year storm event.

The state will also replace the bridge over the brook on Route 30 while providing eight foot wide shoulders along the roadway within the project limits. The project is expected to complete in spring of 2017.

“Whenever you are driving through a road construction zone, please stay alert and be prepared for traffic pattern changes,” Leonard said. “Motorists should be observant of traffic instructions on electronic message boards if you are traveling through the construction areas.”

The exact timing of the work is dependent on the weather and other factors.
