$850K Grant Approved For Pedestrian Safety Upgrades In Cranford

CRANFORD, NJ — A busy stretch of Kenilworth Boulevard near Lenape Park is expected to see new pedestrian safety improvements after Cranford secured an $850,000 federal grant for the project.

Mayor Kathleen Miller Prunty announced the funding during a recent Township Committee meeting, calling the area a priority for safety upgrades.

The project will focus on the four-lane section of Kenilworth Boulevard near the park, an area township officials said sees heavy foot traffic from walkers and runners.

“It’s very active, people running, walking,” Prunty said during the meeting.

Currently, the roadway uses rapid flashing beacons to help pedestrians cross the street amid fast-moving traffic.

The mayor said the township expects the project to move forward later this year as planning continues.

“Probably likely in the fall,” Prunty said when discussing the anticipated timeline.

She added that residents can expect more details on the project as plans are finalized.
