CRANFORD, NJ — A series of overnight incidents involving shattered vehicle windshields in Cranford led to a wider multi-town investigation that ultimately connected similar damage reports across several communities in Union and Middlesex Counties.
In Cranford, residents reported finding their parked vehicles with broken windshields during early April 2026. Similar reports were also received around the same time in other Union County towns, including Linden, Rahway, and Hillside, along with additional cases in Woodbridge and Edison.
Investigators reviewed a pattern of damage spanning April 1 through April 6, with multiple vehicles across the region reportedly struck and damaged using brick pavers, resulting in significant repair costs for vehicle owners.
Through a coordinated investigation involving several local departments, a suspect was identified as 24-year-old Mohamed K. Abdelaal of Iselin. He was taken into custody on May 20.
He faces multiple counts of criminal mischief and was taken to the Union County Jail pending a detention hearing.
Police departments in Cranford, Linden, Rahway, Hillside, Woodbridge, and Edison worked together during the investigation that led to the arrest.
