Seeing More Traffic Stops In Cranford Right Now? Here's Why

Police say several factors are behind the recent uptick.

CRANFORD, NJ — If it seems like police are making more traffic stops around Cranford lately, you're not imagining it.

The Cranford Police Department conducted 116 motor vehicle stops and 74 radar and traffic enforcement details between May 21 and May 27, part of what Police Chief Matthew Nazzaro described as an increase in proactive enforcement tied to the state's annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

"We are actively involved in the 'Click It or Ticket' mobilization after being awarded a grant, which can account for the uptick in motor vehicle stops, based on additional staffing brought in for proactive enforcement," Nazzaro told Patch.

The campaign, which focuses on seat belt enforcement, provides funding for additional patrols and enforcement efforts.

Police activity was elevated in other areas as well, with officers responding to 759 calls for service during the week, including 57 emergency 9-1-1 calls, 15 motor vehicle crashes and 33 medical assistance calls.

According to Nazzaro, the arrival of warmer weather often brings an increase in calls for service as more residents spend time outdoors and schools remain in session.

"As for the difference in call volume, usually when the weather breaks, there is an influx of calls for service that occur," he said.

The chief expects activity levels to moderate as summer approaches.

"As much as it may go up, it will likely decrease during the summer months when residents go on vacation and schools are not in session," Nazzaro said.

For now, however, motorists should expect to see continued traffic enforcement as the statewide seat belt campaign remains underway.
