CRANFORD, NJ — Drivers traveling through Cranford late next week may encounter a sobriety checkpoint as part of an effort aimed at reducing impaired driving.
The Cranford Police Department announced it will conduct a DWI checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday, June 12, through 3 a.m. Saturday, June 13.
Police said the operation is intended to identify drivers who may be impaired while also serving as a deterrent for anyone considering getting behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs.
The department said impaired driving remains a significant safety concern and can contribute to serious and fatal crashes.
Officials are also encouraging residents to report dangerous driving if they believe someone is creating a hazard on the road. Police recommend calling 911 and providing details such as the vehicle description, location and direction of travel when possible.
Police reminded residents that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and encouraged anyone planning a night out to arrange for a sober driver, use public transportation, or take a taxi or ride-share service.
The checkpoint is scheduled to take place somewhere within Cranford, though police did not disclose the specific location.
