Heads Up, Cranford: Flood Watch Issued Through Early Tuesday

CRANFORD, NJ — Cranford residents may want to keep an eye on the weather Monday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for portions of New Jersey, including eastern and western Union County, from Monday afternoon through late Monday night. The watch remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to an alert shared by the Cranford Police Department.

Forecasters say showers and possible thunderstorms moving through the region could produce heavy rainfall, with rainfall rates reaching up to 2 inches per hour in some locations.

Most areas are expected to receive between 1 and 2 inches of rain, though localized amounts of up to 3 inches are possible.

The National Weather Service said excessive runoff could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, along streams and creeks, and in locations with poor drainage. Urban areas may also be susceptible to flooding if heavier bands of rain develop.

A Flood Watch means conditions could become favorable for flooding, but flooding is not currently occurring. Residents who live in flood-prone areas are encouraged to monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action if a Flood Warning is issued.

The watch covers several counties in northeastern New Jersey and parts of New York City.
