CRANFORD, NJ — Temperatures are expected to feel above 100 degrees in Cranford this week as a stretch of hot and humid weather moves into the area.

Cranford officials are warning residents to take precautions as the combination of heat and humidity creates conditions that can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

A heat advisory is in effect from noon Tuesday through 9 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 101 degrees.

The hottest conditions are expected Wednesday, when humidity could make it feel significantly warmer than the actual air temperature.

Officials said older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and those spending extended periods outdoors should take extra precautions during the heat.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas when possible.

Officials also recommend checking on neighbors, friends and family members who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Residents without air conditioning are encouraged to seek out cooler locations during periods of high temperatures and continue doing so until their homes return to a comfortable temperature.

People working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

Anyone experiencing signs of heat stroke, including confusion, loss of consciousness or a high body temperature, should call 911 immediately.

The heat advisory is expected to remain in effect through Wednesday evening.
