CRANFORD, NJ — Just two weeks after an administrative error temporarily stalled a major flood-control project, Cranford officials are moving to get the work back on track.
The Township Committee has scheduled a special virtual meeting for noon on Wednesday, July 22, where officials are expected to consider awarding a contract for the rebid of the Rahway River Desilting and Desnagging Project.
The meeting comes after the committee voted July 7 to reject all bids for the project because of what township officials described as a procedural error that required the work to be rebid.
At that meeting, Commissioner of Public Works and Engineering Brian Andrews emphasized the importance of keeping the project moving, calling it "an incredibly important project" for the township.
As hurricane season continues, Andrews urged the governing body to act as quickly as possible to avoid further delays, including scheduling a special meeting before the committee's next regular session.
The Rahway River desilting and desnagging project is intended to improve the river's flow by removing accumulated sediment, fallen trees and other debris that can restrict water movement during heavy rainstorms. Township officials have described the work as an important flood-mitigation project for Cranford.
The township received two bids when proposals were opened earlier this month. The lowest base bid, submitted by T.R. Weniger Inc., totaled $249,656 before officials determined the bidding process had to be restarted because of the administrative error.
The special meeting will be held remotely through Zoom beginning at 12 p.m. Township officials said the agenda will include the contract award for the rebid project.
Before the public portion of the meeting begins, the Township Committee is expected to meet in closed session. Formal action may be taken during the meeting.
Information on how residents can watch or participate will be posted on the township's website before the meeting.
