Threat On School Bathroom Stall, Prompts Shelter In Place In Cranford

Threatening words were found in the bathroom stall of Hillside Avenue School Tuesday morning. Police say the threat is "not credible."

CRANFORD, NJ — A threat found written on a school bathroom stall in Cranford on Tuesday prompted a shelter in place, said Cranford Public Schools Superintendent Scott Rubin in an email to the school community.

Rubin said at around 10:50 a.m. threatening words were found in a bathroom stall at Hillside Avenue School. The school immediately reported the incident to the Cranford Police Department who determined that the threat is "not credible."

The school initiated a shelter in place, but resumed a regular schedule shortly thereafter.

In partnership with the school, Cranford Police identified the author of the threatening language. The police will conduct a follow up investigation.

"We cannot thank the police enough for all they do to help keep the school community as well as the community at large safe," Rubin wrote in the email.

When asked about the context of the threatening language, Lieutenant Matthew R. Nazzaro from Cranford Police said, "as this is an active police investigation with the Juvenile Bureau, we are unable to comment further."
