Cranford Police Officer Arrested For DWI Following Crash
Nelson Hearns Jr. has been with the department for at least 20 years, according to the police's annual report from 2006.
CRANFORD, NJ — A Cranford Police Officer was charged with driving while intoxicated following a crash in town on Saturday.
Just before 12:30 a.m., Cranford Police went to the scene of a single-vehicle crash within the Township," said Chief of Police Matthew Nazzaro.
Nelson Hearns Jr., a Patrol Officer in Cranford, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and other motor vehicle offenses, said Nazzaro.

"As this remains an ongoing investigation, that is the extent of the information we are able to provide at this time," said Nazzaro.
NJ.com reported that Hearns was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident. Hearns has since been suspended.
