Then you absolutely have to make a stop at Heartwood Restorations in Downtown Cranford. Owner Miguel Garcia has been working with furniture preservation since he was a teenager in Portugal. Miguel was first employed at the Met when he came over to the United States, working with other conservationists on preserving a 16th century Spanish ceiling. Once that job was completed Miguel opened his own shop in Cranford.
Heartwood Restorations mainly focuses on furniture and wood related projects. Many customers bring in antique furniture to be refinished and made beautiful once again. Miguel also had a lot of business following the recent hurricanes in the area and was constantly receiving pieces that had sustained water damage. The location of his store has proven to be a great advantage. Many customers can drive right up in the parking lot and drop off their large pieces of furniture. If a piece has only slight damage or scratches (something that tends to happen often after a move), Miguel will even do house calls and retouch the piece at the customer’s house.
Miguel has extremely high standards which has made it difficult to find someone else who can help him out. He said that customers understand that they need to be flexible with how much time it takes him to repair pieces as he lets only his best work head out the door. He has never needed to advertise as strong word-of-mouth has kept him busy since he first opened his doors.
In addition to working on furniture Miguel will also sell pieces on behalf of his customers. He’ll refinish the pieces and sell the finished pieces in his shop. In the little spare time that he has, Miguel relaxes by painting. You can see a few of his paintings on display in his store, as well as at Simply.
