Ultimate Frisbee Teams To Compete Tonight At Memorial Field

Teams from Cranford and Westfield will go head-to-head during the 6 p.m. match.

You've never seen fribee played quite like this before: imagine two teams of players, launching the discs through the air with intense speed and agility. This isn't the same game you may have played with your dog in the backyard or at a local park. This is Ultimate Frisbee, and a local league will conclude it's summer season with a match at Memorial Field in Cranford at 6 p.m. tonight.

The Cranford Ultimate Frisbee League, now in its fourth season as a league, is sanctioned by USA Ultimate and currently has more than  160 members from Cranford and across central New Jersey.

"We are one of the largest and most competitive leagues in New Jersey," said Evan Feeney, the league's organizer and captain of the White Team.

At tonight's match, a team of players made of of mostly Cranford residents will take on a team from Westfield. Each team plays once a week over an eight-week period, usually at Orange Avenue School in Cranford.

However most of th players, Feeney said, also play on their local high school teams or on their college teams and some even play with elite level frisbee club teams. For people preparing for the college or club season, they train with rigorous schedules that include weight lifting, track workouts, agility-speed workouts and throwing routines.
