North Brunswick, NJ - An accident that shut down Rt. 1 North Tuesday morning in North Brunswick was actually 11 different cars that rear-ended each other in three different accidents with one mile of each other as traffic abruptly ground to a halt, North Brunswick police said.
The accidents all occurred with a roughly 1-mile stretch of Rt. 1 north during the height of Tuesday morning's rush hour, between Milltown Road to Ryders Lane. The accidents were first called in at 8:20 a.m.: First, there was a two-car collision, followed by a three-car motor vehicle accident and finally, a six-car fender bender on the roadway. All the accidents appeared to have been caused by traffic suddenly coming to a stop and the cars driving into each other, rear-ending each other, police told Patch.
There were no life-threatening injuries, but it is unknown if any of the drivers were issued summonses or taken away in an ambulance, police said. Rt. 1 Northbound from Milltown Road to Ryders Lane was shut down from 9:10 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. due to the accidents. It is now re-open.
