14-Year-Old Leads Police on Wild High-Speed Chase in Stolen Car

A 14-year-old, with other boys, 12, 13 and 15 in the car, led police on a high-speed chase down Rt. 18, almost causing several crashes.

East Brunswick, NJ - Four young teenage boys, ages 12, 13, 14 and 15, from Perth Amboy led police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car through East Brunswick and Spotswood last week, police said, blasting through red lights and nearly causing several accidents.

And the driver of the stolen Chevy Traverse was all of 14 years old, according to Spotswood police.

The wild chase, in which a parked car was hit, started in East Brunswick at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, Spotswood police said.

A Chevy Traverse that had been reported stolen was located by East Brunswick officers, who chased it down Rt. 18 south. The pursuit continued onto Rues Lane and down Summerhill Road into Spotswood, where patrolmen there continued the chase.

The Chevy sped down Summerhill Road at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles on the wrong side of the road, police said. It turned into the Spotswood High School parking lot, ignoring “do not enter” signs, and then drove the wrong way through Memorial Middle School’s parking lot.

Speeding all the while, the Chevy then turned onto North Street, almost striking several parked cars, police said. It raced down Main Street in Spotswood, illegally passing other cars on the wrong side of the road and blatantly running several red lights, police said.

While crossing Summerhill Road at Old Stage Road, the Chevy almost caused a major accident as it ran a red light at an extremely high rate of speed.

After that near accident, Spotswood police terminated the high-speed chase near the Shoprite, but kept following the Chevy. The driver lost control of the car on Harrison Avenue in East Brunswick, where he crashed into a parked car.

At that point, four teens got out of the car and fled on foot, running back into Spotswood and into nearby woods, police said. Spotswood and East Brunswick police set up a perimeter and immediately began searching.

During this time, Spotswood police began receiving multiple 911 calls from Pamela Court and Clyne Avenue residents saying that several ”suspicious” looking boys were knocking on their doors, asking for rides to Perth Amboy.

Finally, officers were able to locate all four suspects at the 7-11 on Old Stage Road and Victoria Avenue in Spotswood. It was there that they learned the driver of the car was 14 years old. The passengers were 12, 13 and 15, and all were from Perth Amboy.

All the boys were taken into custody and transported to the East Brunswick Police Department. The driver is charged with eluding (in a motor vehicle with risk or death or injury) and resisting arrest. The three other teens were charged with resisting arrest (by flight).
