EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — The Revolution is coming to East Brunswick. The East Brunswick Arts Commission will host "Voices of the Revolution: Music and Tales from a Defining Era" on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center.
The evening celebrates America's 250th anniversary by transforming the arts center into a Revolutionary-era tavern, complete with live music, storytelling, colonial dancing and hands-on activities for all ages.
"It is a complete reenactment, a step back in time to the 1700s at the time when we were going through our Revolutionary War period," Mayor Brad Cohen said. "There'll be opportunities for live music, dancing, learning about the themes of the day, storytelling, interactive experience for people and for children of all different age groups, so I really think it's something you shouldn't miss."
Guests can meet George Washington, hear the sounds of the Revolution and try their hand at colonial dancing, according to the arts commission.
Young patriots can also take on George Washington's Spy Messenger Challenge, which Cohen called one of the evening's highlights.
"It really allows you to learn a little bit about intelligence and how information and secrets were exchanged to the troops," Cohen said. "Clearly, there was no internet, there was no ability to text people."
Families are encouraged to come in their best colonial attire.
"Please come out, bring your family, dress in whatever revolutionary gear you may have at home, and let's step back in time as a community," Cohen said.
The event is free and open to the public and is funded by a grant from the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners through the Middlesex County Cultural and Arts Trust Fund.
