Cancer-Stricken ICE Detainee Released, Congresswoman Says

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman said the man, who had been held at Delaney Hall since December, can now get medical care.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — A South River business owner who lawmakers say was suffering from worsening health problems has been released from ICE detention at Delaney Hall in Newark, U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., said Monday.

In a statement, Watson Coleman said Amro Sehaim was released after "repeated inquiries, letters, and demands for humanitarian release from me and others." She said she received the news over the weekend.

Watson Coleman said Sehaim was being treated for cancer before he was detained and that his condition worsened at Delaney Hall. "Mr. Sehaim can now get the medical attention he needs," she said.

She also criticized conditions at the facility. "Many more detainees find themselves in similar situations," Watson Coleman said. "They cannot access the medical care they need and are living in substandard conditions in the for-profit Delaney Hall detention center."

Sehaim had been held at Delaney Hall since December 2025, according to an Aug. 7 letter that Watson Coleman and four other New Jersey members of Congress sent to the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Reps. Frank Pallone Jr., Robert Menendez, LaMonica McIver and Analilia Mejia also signed it. The letter asked for his release and an independent medical evaluation.

In a Sept. 17 follow-up letter, Watson Coleman said the first letter had gone unanswered. She said Sehaim had reported severe pain, trouble breathing and a lack of care, and had been denied humanitarian parole and habeas corpus requests. She set an Oct. 16 deadline for a response from ICE.

It was not immediately clear when Sehaim was released or under what conditions.
