EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A firefighter was taken to the hospital and residents were displaced after a fire broke out in the basement of an East Brunswick home early on Nov. 6, police said.
Police received a 911 call around 6:54 a.m. on Nov. 6 about a fire at a home on Fieldstone Court, according to the East Brunswick Police Department.
When officers got there, they saw heavy smoke coming from the back of the house. Everyone inside had already gotten out before emergency crews arrived, police said.
A resident told police they woke up to a smoke detector going off and found heavy smoke coming from the basement. Everyone in the home left right away and called 911.
Firefighters from all three East Brunswick fire districts, along with the North Brunswick and Milltown fire departments, worked to put out the fire. Milltown EMS and RWJ EMS also responded.
One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, police said. No residents were reported hurt.
The East Brunswick fire inspector and the township building inspector also came to the scene. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but police said there are currently no signs it was suspicious. The investigation is ongoing.
Police reminded residents to keep working smoke detectors throughout their homes, saying that early detection and getting out quickly are critical to protecting lives in a fire.
