Baby in North Brunswick Crash Was Not in Car Seat, Police Confirm

BREAKING: The six-month-old infant critically injured Tuesday on Rt. 130 was not in a car seat at the time, police confirmed to Patch.

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - The six-month-old baby critically injured in a car crash Tuesday in North Brunswick Township was not secured in a car seat at the time of the crash, North Brunswick police confirmed to Patch.

The baby remains at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, where he has been upgraded to serious, but stable condition, Capt. Brian Hoiberg of the North Brunswick police said.

Patch first reported on the accident Tuesday afternoon, when it tied up traffic for hours at the intersection of Carolier Lane and Rt. 130. A North Brunswick squad car came across the serious accident at 2:55 p.m. just moments after it occurred, Hoiberg said. An unoccupied school bus and a gold Subaru had collided with each other at Rt. 130 north and Carolier Lane. The bus was solely occupied by the driver, and the Subaru had three occupants inside, including an infant. The three occupants of the Subaru were transported to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick as traumatic injuries. Initial reports said the baby had been critically injured.

"We have been told that the baby is in serious but stable condition," Hoiberg said Wednesday afternoon.

ABC 7 was the first to report, citing anonymous sources, that the child may not have been in a car seat, but police did not confirm that until just now.

"The baby was not restrained in a car seat," Capt. Hoiberg said.

The driver of the bus was also transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said. A photo of the bus from the crash scene is above.

All three Subaru passengers remain at RWJUH at this time.

While North Brunswick traffic investigators are actively investigating the incident to determine exactly what happened, one of those vehicles had to enter the intersection improperly in order for the cars to collide, police said. No charges have been filed as of yet, as accident investigators are still piecing together what happened. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
