Bear Seen in Milltown Thursday Night, Police Report

He was picking through trash cans at about 9:30 p.m. in a residential neighborhood.

Milltown, NJ - A bear was spotted at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Milltown, Milltown police report.

The bear was seen in the area of South Brook Drive, where it was seen picking through trash cans looking for food. The bear shortly retreated back into the woods. A young black bear was seen roaming all over South Brunswick Township over the July 4 holiday weekend, so bears are not unusual for the area, especially at this time of year. Police in South Brunswick warned that bears learn very quickly and will associate garbage with food. Bears will eat almost anything including human food, garbage, pet food, birdseed and small livestock. Once they find an easily accessible food source, like garbage in a housing development, they will lose their wariness of people and may return to the available food source over and over again.

The New Jersey Dept. of Fish and Wildlife was contacted. If you see a bear in a residential area, do not approach it, police caution, and simply call 911 instead.
