"Your people shall be my people: Conversion to Judiasm through the centuries." Throughout history non-Jew's have joined the Jewish people. Though many things have changed over time, some features of conversion to Judaism, or Giyyur, have been remarkably stable over the long period since rabbinic law became normative.
