East Brunswick Asks County Limit Tonnage, Traffic On Cranbury Rd

The council passed a resolution requesting Middlesex County to limit tonnage and tractor-trailers traffic on Cranbury Road.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — The East Brunswick Council on Monday passed a resolution requesting Middlesex County to limit tonnage carried by trucks and to eliminate tractor-trailers from traveling on Cranbury Road.

During previous Council meetings, residents expressed concern over the trucks traveling on the road. There was discussion about what the Council could do to reduce the tonnage and size of trucks traveling on the road.

Cranbury Road is a County road and part of the Department of Transportation plan, said Michael Baker, township attorney. Baker said the first place to start would be with the county to see if they examine the matter and limit tonnage and tractor-trailers traffic since it was their road.

Once adopted the resolution would be forwarded to Middlesex County.

“It’s not impossible but it doesn’t happen fast. This is the start of the process,” said Baker.

Cranbury Road or County Route 535 (CR 535) is a county highway that extends 32.31 miles from Logan Avenue, in Mercer County to an interchange with US 9 and Route 35 in South Amboy. The road is one of the main thoroughfares in East Brunswick along Rt. 18 and Dunhams Corner Road. The road intersects at Ryders Lane and passes East Brunswick High School.

Councilman Kevin McEvoy said many residents shared their concerns with him regarding truck traffic on the road. McEvoy said he was willing "to champion the work that is needed to stand with county officials and state officials” to at least reduce the tonnage of the trucks that travel Cranbury Road.
